Plot

The film begins with two Indian agents working under Ranvir Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) chasing an international arms dealer Mikhail (Prithviraj Sukumaran), but failing to capture him. One of the agents, Ajay Singh Rajput (Akshay Kumar), promises to bring Mikhail down.

The story then shifts to Shabana Khan (Taapsee Pannu), a college student and a Kudo fighter, who lives with her mother in Mumbai. She has a crush on her classmate Jai (Taher Shabbir), who helps her win a Kudo competition. One night, they go on a date and are attacked by some eve-teasers, who kill Jai after he fights them off. Shabana is arrested for killing one of the attackers in self-defense, but is released after Ranvir contacts her and offers her help to avenge Jai's death. He also reveals that he works for a secret intelligence agency that is looking for recruits like her.

Shabana agrees to join the agency on the condition that they kill all the attackers. She undergoes rigorous training under the guidance of Ajay and Om Prakash Shukla (Anupam Kher), another senior agent. She is then assigned to kill one of the attackers, who is in Goa. She succeeds in her mission with the help of Ajay and Shukla, who remotely guide her through an earpiece.

Ranvir then tells Shabana that she has to kill Mikhail, who is planning to sell some weapons to a terrorist group in Malaysia. He also informs her that Mikhail has a connection with one of Jai's killers, Tony (also played by Prithviraj Sukumaran), who is his twin brother and right-hand man. Shabana agrees to take up the task and flies to Kuala Lumpur with Ajay and Shukla.

In Malaysia, they track down Tony and follow him to a hotel, where he meets Mikhail. Shabana manages to enter Mikhail's room and attempts to kill him, but he escapes after a fight. She then chases him to the rooftop, where she faces Tony. She kills Tony after a fierce combat and then shoots Mikhail, who falls off the building.

The film ends with Shabana receiving a new mission from Ranvir, while Ajay and Shukla praise her skills and dedication.

Meena Iyer of The Times of India gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and wrote, \"Naam Shabana is a fairly predictable spy-thriller that does not go beyond the obvious. But for those who enjoy the genre, there are enough watchable sequences to keep you hooked.\" She praised Pannu's performance and action scenes, but felt that the film lacked the edge-of-the-seat factor and was too long.

Rajeev Masand of CNN-News18 gave the film 2 stars out of 5 and wrote, \"Naam Shabana is an unnecessary spin-off of Baby that fails to live up to the expectations. It is a dull and tedious film that suffers from a weak script and poor direction. The only saving grace is Taapsee Pannu, who delivers a sincere and impressive performance as the lead character.\" He criticized the film for being unrealistic, illogical and boring.

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film 1.5 stars out of 5 and wrote, \"Naam Shabana is a spin-off that should have stayed in the shadows. It is a disappointing film that wastes the talent of its actors and the potential of its premise. It is neither smart nor thrilling, and ends up being a drag.\" She slammed the film for being clichéd, predictable and sloppy.

Tamil Dubbed Version

The film was dubbed in Tamil as Naam Shabana: Thaana Serndha Koottam (Naam Shabana: The Self-Formed Gang). The Tamil version was released on April 7, 2017 along with the Telugu version. The Tamil version was distributed by Across Films and had a limited release in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil version did not perform well at the box office and was overshadowed by other Tamil releases such as Kavan and Dora.
